
ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects about 4-5% of the population and is highly genetic. The two major problems people with ADHD experience are inattention and hyperactivity. These problems can negatively impact a person’s education, work, daily activities, relationships and quality of life.
There are two types of ADHD:
- Inattentive subtype: with inattention symptoms but no problematic hyperactivity
- Combined subtype: with both inattention and hyperactivity symptoms
ADHD symptoms are as follows:
- Struggling with attention to details
- Difficulties completing school or work tasks
- Disorganisation
- Being fidgety, restless or hyperactive
- Talking excessively
- Impatience
This condition can cause problems with:
- Impulse control
- Emotional regulation
- Anger management
- Substance misuse
- Sleep disorders
You can take an online questionnaire to see if ADHD is a possibility. This questionnaire is called the ASRS, which is a symptom checklist based on the ADHD diagnostic criteria. In Part A, a score of 4 or more from these first 6 questions is predictive of Adult ADHD.
